Shoplifting Laws ‘Don’t Deter’ Thieves

BBC News carried a story that investigated the world of the shoplifter and found that many of them are not deterred by the sentences that could be received.

A woman named Kelsey was interviewed for the Victoria Derbyshire programme and told producers that, “Nine times out of 10, you get away with it, and you’re not bothered about the consequences.”

Kelsey, a recovering drug addict, added, “Once you do get caught, it’s a four-month jail sentence and you’re out in two months.”
