According to the Express & Star, shoplifters are striking twice every day in Walsall town centre, with a councillor worrying the problem is putting struggling businesses under even more pressure.

Between July 2016 and June this year there were 722 reported incidents in the St. Matthews policing area – 60 a month on average.

Councillor Aftab Nawaz said, “Businesses can go under because of it,” adding, “a lot of criminals are doing it just to sell stuff on so we need to target the people buying stolen goods as well as those taking it.”

He also revealed that shoplifting was partially behind Asda’s decision to axe its 24 hour opening at its George Street store last year.
