Police in South Derbyshire are set to launch a crackdown on shoplifting in the run-up to the festive season.

According to the Burton Mail, officers will be visiting shops across the area in a bid halt the annual rise in the crime.

Business owners and staff members will be offered top tips on how to ‘spot a shoplifter’ as well as being given advice on how to deal with someone who has stolen something.

Nigel Lidsey, Derby South section inspector said: “This time of year, the one crime that starts to rise, apart from burglaries, has to be shoplifting.

“We had an issue with this before the summer and got a handle on it by educating shop owners and staff.”
