Shoplifters Steal £826k Per Week

The Sun reports staggering statistics that reveal shoplifting cost Britain’s storekeepers £43million last year – or £826,000 a week.

Some £19million of the total was stolen by staff, with 7,455 theft cases.

Crime in general cost stores £122million, or £2,370 per shop, with £36million lost through fraud and £15million in burglaries, the Association of Convenience Stores study found.

James Lowman, chief executive of ACS, said: “These figures should end once and for all the notion that shop theft is a victimless crime,” adding, “theft hurts shop owners, thwarts investment in their business and ultimately costs jobs.”
