Woman Stole As ‘Crutch’ For Anxiety

The Belfast Telegraph reports that a woman claimed she used shoplifting as a “crutch” because she was anxious over a £20,000 credit card debt.

Julie Adair mounted a mammoth thieving spree and stole an “eye-watering” amount of goods, worth “thousands”, and pleaded guilty to 16 charges of shoplifting from stores including M&S, B&M, Pep&Co, Peacocks, Boots and Debenhams.

Her defence barrister told a court that, “debt was what was making her anxious and this [the theft] was the crutch she turned to.”
