Lidl Trials ‘VAR’ Self Checkouts
Thursday, 10th July 2025 at 9:18amAccording to the Retail Systems website, Lidl has become the latest major supermarket to trial new self-service checkouts, to help address record levels of shoplifting.
The tills feature cameras that detect when shoppers fail to scan items properly, then plays back recorded footage on a screen before customers can complete their purchases.
The move follows similar trials by Tesco Sainsbury’s, with the technology earning the nickname “VAR-style” checkouts after football’s Video Assistant Referee system.
