Shoplifting Offences Doubled In 2023

According to the Sky News website, shoplifting has hit a record high with 16.7 million incidents recorded in 2023 – more than double compared with 2022.

Theft cost retailers about £1.8bn – also a record – and this is the first time it has passed the £1bn mark, according to an annual survey by the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

The BBC News website reports that a former general manager of insurance firm Jersey Mutual defrauded the company and stole over £3million over a 13-year period.

A court heard how Roy Anthony Jeanne took advantage of his elevated position and treated the firm as his “own personal credit facility”.

Trio Stole Chicken Worth £318k

The BBC News website reports that three men joined forces to fraudulently supply a company with more than £318,000-worth of chicken.

Darren Williams and Elliot Smith worked at the 2 Sisters Food Group and supplied the meat to the owner of Townsend Poultry, Rana Dhalia.

Depot Worker Stole Smartwatches

According to the Northwich & Winsford Guardian website, Matthew Lambert stole nearly £10,000 of high-end smartwatches from his employer.

Managers started to suspect there was a thief on site after an order couldn’t be fulfilled, despite systems showing stock was available.
