Police Identify 20 Shoplifting Gangs

According to the Mail Online website a national police unit set up to tackle the scourge of shoplifting in the UK has identified more than 20 gangs and 200 criminals fuelling the epidemic.

Operation Opal has also identified 61 vehicles the gangs use to move shoplifters and goods around the country.

‘Fake’ Security Guard Stole Cash

The BBC News website reports that a career criminal lied to get a job as a hospital security guard, before stealing from his employer.

Daniel Carter used a fake security licence to get work at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and stole £1,425 from the hospital.

Car Dealership Worker Stole £29k

As reported on the Manchester Evening News website, an accounts assistant stole £29,000 from her boss after complaining about the cost of her 19-mile commute to work.

Rebecca Hassell diverted refunds at the car dealership to her own bank accounts and attempted to steal £18,000 using its card machines.

The Sun website reports that high street stores are slapping security tags on advent calendars worth just £2 — as shoplifters gear up for Christmas.

Retail favourites including WHSmith and Tesco are among those ­fitting anti-theft devices to even cheap festive treats, including the Bluey advent calendars.

Pensioner Made £600k Selling Fake Bags

According to the Sunday World website, a pensioner who made more than £600,000 profit selling hundreds of fake designer handbags will only have to pay back £25,000.

A court heard how Roseleen Ann D’Arcy started offending after returning from a holiday in Dubai with a fake bag and was asked to bring one back for a friend on a future trip.

£200 Shoplifting Threshold Scrapped

As reported on the Grocery Gazette website, the government is planning to reverse the current £200 threshold in its shoplifting charter, to better tackle the rise in retail crime.

The government is set to remove the 2014 shoplifting legislation, which makes shop theft involving property with a value of £200 or less, a summary-only offence.
