Supermarkets Must Do More To Combat Theft

A story in the Burton Mail gives details of two top cops in Derbyshire saying that supermarkets must do more to deal with shoplifting.

The pair – police and crime commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa and chief constable Mick Creedon – think supermarkets could work with the police more to reduce the problem of shoplifting at a time when the force has more to deal with and fewer officers to solve crimes.

Wales Online reports that an employee of the Co-op in Llandeilo stole more than £3,000 to help pay his bills and buy cannabis.

Daniel Gebbie voided customer transactions and pocketed the money himself, over a period of around 16 months.

Waitrose Change Security Tactic

The Gloucestershire Live website reports that a branch of Waitrose in Stroud has resorted to stationing security guards at the main entrance of the store in a bid to combat shoplifters.

A county crime expert said that while he could not comment specifically on Waitrose’s move, certain items are targeted by shoplifters because of their high value, relatively small size, and the ease with which they can be passed on.

A Global Fraud Study in America showed that 30% of all business failures are caused by employee theft, with the median loss for a single occupational fraud incident calculated as $145,000.

A claims manager has been sentenced to five years jail after he masterminded the theft of more than £1.8m from his employers.

Martin Turner doctored insurance claims emails, making direct payments for personal items and services including house renovations, luxury cars and to clear an existing mortgage.
