As reported on the Retail Gazette website, shoplifting cases have surged 16% in just three months as thieves steal essential products from supermarkets amidst soaring living costs.

According to Freedom of Information requests by The Telegraph, Sainsbury’s and Tesco accounted for two-fifths (40%) of overall cases.

The Talking Retail website reports that supermarkets’ self-checkouts are being particularly targeted by first-time shoplifters who have no criminal background.

According to retail artificial intelligence specialist Scanwatch, UK retailers have reported an 18% rise in theft in the second half 2022 and, in nine out of 10 incidents, self-checkout tills were being used.

According to Yahoo! News, a major shoplifting ring has been busted after a ‘swap-shop’ containing thousands of pounds worth of designer shoes and clothes was discovered by police.

Officers raided a property in Nottingham and found around 240 boxes of designer shoes, 40 boxes of household goods and cosmetics as well as clothes stacked floor to ceiling.

The Belfast Live website reports that high performance police Interceptor cars are being used to tackle organised shoplifting gangs operating across Ireland and Britain.

The Daily Record website reports that an “overzealous” security guard at a Lidl store broke a thief’s leg after tackling him for shoplifting.

Leandro Da Silva spotted the thief – David O’Connor – trying to steal from the shop in Edinburgh and knelt on his body to restrain him, before piling a second thief on top of him.
