Shoplifting Duo Targeted Morrisons

As reported on the Wigan Today website, two shoplifters went on thieving sprees over three months, targeting supermarket chain Morrisons.

Antonio Marin and Valentin-Florin Ionica stole a total of £9,408 worth of goods in 12 strikes in stores in Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, the Midlands and the West Country.

Starmer To Reverse ‘Shoplifter’s Charter’

According to the Hunts Post website, Keir Starmer has promised retail workers he will crack down on crime and reverse what he called a Tory “Shoplifter’s Charter”.

In a speech at retail union USDAW’s conference, he pledged to reverse a policy that means shoplifting of goods under £200 is not investigated.

JD Sports To Use Tagging Sprays

The Retail Gazette website reports that JD Sports is introducing tagging sprays across its stores nationwide as it ramps up security measures in its fight against shoplifting.

The sprays leave a synthetic DNA and a UV marker on property and criminals, which can then be used to link assets to owners and criminals to crime scenes.

The LBC website reports that Tesco has resorted to locking its protein bars in security boxes as part of the latest wave of anti-shoplifting measures.

£55m Government Crackdown On Shoplifting

The Guardian website reports that the government is investing more than £55m over the next four years in expanding facial recognition systems.

The plan includes £4m for mobile units that can be deployed on high streets using live facial recognition in crowded areas to identify people wanted by the police.

‘Sick Leave’ Thief Stole £500

According to the Kent Live website, a woman who stole more than £500 worth of alcohol from Waitrose claimed she was desperate for cash because she was on sick leave.

It was claimed in court that Habiba Bentchakal took up a suggestion to steal as a way of making money whilst she was off work.
